Use Consequences Infrequently
The most important thing I can tell you about using consequences with defiant children is to do it as little as possible. Consequences are important, but the only way they work with defiant children is if you’ve already used all of the other skills and strategies you learned from the previous days. When you can, try to reason with your child and consider your child’s point of view even if you don’t agree with him. I often remind parents that they can acknowledge their child’s point of view without agreeing with him.
Here are some examples of things you might say:“I know you feel it was justified, but I cannot agree that you had the right to push your sister.”
